Annie Elizabeth Pennell Swanson was born December 6, 1906 in Fodice,
Texas. She was the second child of seven children born to Mr.
and Mrs. John Pennell, Sr. When the deceased was two years
old, the family moved to Palestine for better job and educational
advantages. Mrs. Swanson grew up in the Cottrell Chapel C.M.E.
Church and continued her affiliation with the church to the end of
her life. Annie's public school education was completed at
Washington Elementary and Lincoln High School in Palestine.
Her college work was done at Mary Allen College in Crockett and
Texas College at Tyler. She constantly strove to upgrade her
professional efficiency by attending summer sessions at Texas
Southern University at Houston and Sam Houston at Huntsville, and by
enrolling in and completing correspondence courses related to her
private interests and professional commitments. In 1933, she was
married to Henry Clayton Swanson, Jr., and to this union a daughter,
Floralyn was born. For more than twenty years, she was an able
and productive teacher of the youth of this state. Her life was
characterized by her singular devotion to those who needed her and
to the educational and personal standards of excellence which she
set for herself. She was a gently person, respectful of the
rights of others, honest in her dealings with all people. All
whose lives she touched are richer for having known her. She
departed this life on August 8, 1970. She is survived by her
daughter, Mrs. Floralyn Green, Fort Worth; her mother, Mrs. John
Pennell, Sr., Palestine; two brothers, John Pennell, Jr., of St.
Louis, Mo., and Moses a. Pennell II, Palestine; a sister, Mrs. Alma
Gunter, San Francisco; a granddaughter, Ollie Green; a nephew, Moses
A. Pennell, III; a niece Amy Pennell, Houston, and host of relatives
and friends. |
